Open to Close (Half Fast Subs)
Artist Statement:
My final piece takes the listeners through an audio experience of a day in the life of a food service worker. The story begins slowly and calmly, ramping up intensity as the work day gets busier and busier. A car starting opens the scene, and the first few sounds are simple cleaning noises while opening the restaurant. The audio layers begin to build off of one another, and the sounds get more overwhelming as the store fills with customers. The end of the piece returns back to a calm vibe, and the sounds of cleaning and closing the store wrap up the story and connect it back to the beginning. Throughout this project I learned a lot about audibly pleasing sounds versus harsh sounds, and how these two can work together to convey specific feelings related to different experiences. This project was a really fun experience for me, even though at some points it truly felt like the soundscape and intensity of being at work (which can be pretty stressful sometimes). I enjoyed learning how to use Adobe Audition, and I can definitely see myself using this software for many future projects. One important thing I learned while using premiere is that the volume sounds very different through headphones than it does through the laptop speakers. I had a few issues in the end with how quiet some of the clips were, and in the future I will definitely jump between the two audio sources so that I can have a better idea of the overall sounds composition.
